Koichi Hosoi is currently Invited Professor at the Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University, and he is also Principal Senior Researcher at AIRI, which is the registered consulting institute of the Japan Patent Office.

He completed his PhD from the Graduate School of Materials Production Science at Osaka University, where he studied precipitation phenomena in weld metals under thermal cycling and other phenomena.

Prof Hosoi also became Pastor of the United Church of Christ in Japan ,and he is also currently pastoring at Chigasaki Tsutsumi Church.

Prior to that, he was an engineer at Kobe Steel, a major Japanese steelmaker, where he spent more than 30 years researching and developing steel and welding materials. Among them, he succeeded in developing and inventing the world’s first flux-cored wire that does not deteriorate in toughness even post heat treatment after welding. This is still attracting attention from around the world as a technology that dramatically improves productivity in manufacturing large-scale energy plants such as offshore structures and reactor vessels.

He participated in the preparation of an overall plan for research and development on welding technology at Kobe Steel, a world-class steel manufacturer. Alongside this, he chaired and served on various committees in the field of materials engineering and received numerous awards from the Japan Welding Society and the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation.

In recent years, he has lectured and published on manufacturing from the perspectives of the global environment, metal processing and intellectual property.
