On 3rd June at 1pm Dr Chris Wild will give a seminar entitled ‘Applying Christian Values to a Genetic Age’.
Abstract: We are living through a genetic revolution. This novel technology impinges on fundamental human beliefs and values, affecting our family life, the way societies function, the nature of our planet and even how we see ourselves. There are many benefits to the rapid advances in genetics but also a number of challenges and risks. Yet, among the general public there is limited understanding of the science and little appreciation of the deep consequences for our collective future.
In this talk I will outline the major areas where advances in genetics are having an impact on everyday life. The areas are grouped under four technologies linked to reading, copying, editing and storing the genetic code. Furthermore, I will propose a framework for evaluating these technologies in order to enable personal decision-making and encourage participation in shaping of societal practices. The approach considers how genetic advances will affect four vital areas of relationships: with self, family, society and the world we live in.
I chose this “relationship test” because relationships are: a) a fundamental part of being human and therefore universally relevant; b) the vehicle by which, in the image and likeness of God, we love others; c) able to accommodate future advances. Anything that impinges on our relationships merits careful scrutiny.
A light sandwich lunch will be provided from 12:30 in the Healey Room, Westminster College, Madingley Road Cambridge. Please be seated by 12:50 so that the seminar can start promptly.
Information for those wanting to join the seminar online will be posted here on the day of the event and also circulated to all ticket holders beforehand.
